Socotra is a Yemeni island (and archipelago of the same name) located in the Indian Ocean, known for its unique and endemic flora and fauna. It is home to over 700 species of plants and animals that are found nowhere else in the world, including the Dragon's Blood Tree and the Socotra Desert Rose (Bottle Tree). The island also has a rich cultural heritage, with a mix of Arab and African influences.
I visited Socotra in March, led by a desire to photograph this exceptionally unique and beautiful place, and to learn more about it through experience and connection.
On our first evening of the trip, we headed to the rolling dunes of Zaheq for sunset, which go all the way out to the Ocean. It was a rather stormy afternoon, which made for deep colors in the sky and shadows. I came across this wave of sand made by the wind, and created a composition that highlights the textures and colors of this unique spot.
About the Image
For the first time, I am offering artist editions.
I created these for collectors, photography enthusiasts, and those who would like the highest quality prints to display in their space.
Each print is signed, dated by year, and editioned on the back in graphite. Photos are printed on Hahnemuhle PhotoRag Satin– a paper I chose for its delicate texture and sense of depth it gives the images.
Photos are printed by Thomas Editions in Los Angeles, and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
I hope these pieces will give you a sense wonder for years to come.
